The Cardiac Surgery Service maintains a close collaboration with the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Germans Trias i Pujol Institute for Research (IGTP) on translational research projects and advanced training programmes in the field of cardiovascular diseases.
The Service actively participates in national and international studies aimed at improving outcomes and innovating surgical techniques, with its main research lines focusing on ischaemic heart disease and valvular disease.
Within the framework of the IGTP, a significant part of the research is conducted using animal models in the animal facility of the Can Ruti Campus, which allows the study of new devices, surgical techniques and therapeutic strategies before their application in clinical practice. This activity strictly adheres to current ethical and animal welfare regulations, and constitutes a key pillar for innovation and knowledge transfer to the Cardiac Surgery Service.

Featured service news:
Coronary surgery and the complications of a heart attack
Performing coronary artery bypass grafts using conventional and high-precision techniques to restore blood flow to the heart. The service prioritises the use of arterial grafts, in addition to venous ones, and the application of intraoperative flowmetry technologies to optimise outcomes. An off-pump approach is promoted in selected patients to reduce postoperative complications. Surgery aimed at treating acute mechanical complications of myocardial infarction, such as septal rupture, acute mitral regurgitation due to papillary muscle rupture or free wall rupture, is often performed in an emergency setting.
Valve surgery
Comprehensive surgical treatment of valvular heart diseases, using both repair and replacement techniques. Mechanical and biological prostheses are used according to the patient's profile, and valve repair is prioritised when possible, especially of the mitral valve, using advanced reconstructive techniques and, in selected cases, minimally invasive or hybrid approaches, in collaboration with the Haemodynamics Unit. Combined procedures with coronary revascularisation are also performed.
Aortic surgery
Interventions for acute or chronic aortic pathology such as aneurysms, infections and dissections, including repair, open replacement and endovascular techniques, in collaboration with the Service of Angiology and Vascular Surgery.
Arrhythmia surgery
Performing surgical procedures for the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias, especially atrial fibrillation, using controlled lesion techniques with various types of energy, often in conjunction with valve surgery or left atrial procedures. These interventions aim to restore sinus rhythm and reduce the risk of thromboembolism in selected patients. In addition, the Service collaborates with Electrophysiology on the implantation of innovative defibrillators and the complex extraction of infected systems.
Minimally invasive cardiac surgery
Procedures performed through small incisions using video cameras and specialised instruments, with shorter recovery times and less cosmetic impact. They are particularly used for valve surgery and adult congenital heart defects, and may be considered as an alternative to ascending aortic replacement, coronary surgery and arrhythmia surgery.
Surgical treatment of adult congenital heart disease
Surgical treatment of simple congenital or residual defects in adult patients, such as atrial or ventricular septal communications, coarctations, surgery for obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and reoperations of previous procedures. The Service works closely with Adult Cardiology and Familial Cardiomyopathies.
Surgery for advanced heart failure
The service guarantees the selection, surgical execution and perioperative monitoring of patients with advanced heart failure requiring mechanical support, in accordance with the highest standards of safety and clinical ethics, in close coordination with the Heart Failure Unit.
Mechanical assistance devices
Implantation of short- and long-term ventricular support devices to stabilise patients with acute or advanced chronic heart failure. This includes the use of temporary equipment (Impella, ECMO) and long-term devices such as the HeartMate 3. The Service also collaborates with the Intensive Care Medicine Service on the advanced treatment programme for respiratory failure using ECMO VV.
Hybrid surgery
Performing combined surgical and interventional procedures in a single session, especially useful in complex mitral and aortic valve pathology. The centre's hybrid operating theatre enables seamless collaboration between surgeons and interventional cardiologists.
Surgery for heart tumours
Exeresis of mediastinal and intracardiac masses, using localised resection and functional preservation techniques. The service ensures multidisciplinary assessment for each case.
Extreme liver surgery
Joint participation with General and Digestive Surgery in the surgical treatment of neoplasms of the hepatopancreatic region or retroperitoneum that require complex vascular control and mechanical circulatory support. The service provides specialised assistance in extracorporeal circulation and intraoperative haemodynamic management to ensure maximum safety.
Hyperthermic perfusion surgery with cytostatics
Performing regional hypothermic perfusion procedures with chemotherapeutic agents in patients with aggressive neoplasms. The Cardiac Surgery Service is responsible for the technical management of extracorporeal circulation and for controlling temperature and flow to ensure optimal distribution of cytostatics and minimise systemic toxicity.
Emergency surgery
Urgent and emergency care for critically ill patients. The service has a 24-hour on-call team (surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses and perfusionists) to ensure a rapid and coordinated response with the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit.
The Cardiac Surgery Service at Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol is recognised as a pioneering centre in Catalonia and across the State for the development and application of advanced techniques in the treatment of cardiac valvular pathology.
Our team has been at the forefront of implanting sutureless aortic prostheses, which allow for less invasive procedures and faster recovery, while maintaining excellence in clinical and surgical outcomes.
For over 6 years, the department has routinely performed mitral valve repair via a minimally invasive endoscopic approach, a technique that has demonstrated excellent results in terms of patient safety, comfort and recovery. Recently, this same approach has also been incorporated for the treatment of aortic valve pathology, thus expanding the options for endoscopic surgery at our centre.
Our team also stands out for its expertise in hybrid procedures with the Haemodynamics Unit, offering the full spectrum of transcatheter therapies for valvular disease. We are one of the few centres in southern Europe that integrates, within a single multidisciplinary team, innovative techniques such as transcatheter mitral prostheses (Tendyne, Epygon) and devices for transcatheter mitral and tricuspid repair (Neochord, Cardioband).
Furthermore, the Service has one of the most extensive series of Ross procedures (the replacement of the diseased aortic valve with the patient's own pulmonary valve – a pulmonary autograft – and subsequently placing a pulmonary homograft in the original pulmonary position) in the entire country.
The Cardiac Surgery Service maintains a close collaboration with the Autonomous University of Barcelona and the Germans Trias i Pujol Institute for Research (IGTP) on translational research projects and advanced training programmes in the field of cardiovascular diseases.
