The Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital is a Centre, Service and Unit of reference for the performance of surgery for movement disorders in adult patients with Parkinson's disease, essential tremor, dystonia and other neurological disorders affecting movement.

 

 

Surgery for movement disorders, especially via deep brain stimulation (DBS), is an effective therapeutic option for patients with neurological conditions such as Parkinson's disease, essential tremor and certain forms of dystonia, in both adults and children. This treatment is indicated when medication no longer provides adequate control of symptoms or can no longer maintain a good level of independence and quality of life. Deep brain stimulation has been shown to be highly effective in improving motor symptoms and has established itself as one of the main therapeutic options for selected patients.

For patients who, due to age or other associated illnesses, are not candidates for conventional surgery, we also have innovative and non-invasive techniques such as high-intensity focused ultrasound guided by magnetic resonance imaging (HIFU). This technology allows precise targeting of the brain areas responsible for the symptoms, without the need for open surgery, thus expanding the available therapeutic options for movement disorders.

Vall Hebron Hospital carries out follow-ups for patients in childhood. Once these patients reach adulthood, they are referred to the Germans Trias i Pujol Hospital to continue their disease monitoring at our CSUR.
