I am having outpatient surgery

Cirurgia Major Ambulatòria

Surgery without hospital admission—known as Ambulatory Major Surgery (AMS)—is a type of surgical procedure where you arrive, undergo surgery, and return home all on the same day. It may involve local, regional, or general anesthesia.

Germans Trias Hospital performs an average of more than 30 such surgeries every day. Virtually all surgical specialties carry out these procedures.

Pre-anesthesia Consultation

If you are scheduled for this type of procedure, you will visit the hospital a few days beforehand for a consultation with an anesthesiologist to prepare for the operation.

In some cases—especially if we already have very recent clinical data on file—this consultation may take place solely by phone.

If an in-person visit is required, it will take place at the Ambulatory Major Surgery administrative office (2nd floor, operating room area).

During the pre-anesthesia consultation, you will be provided with information regarding pre-operative fasting.

Following the pre-anesthesia consultation, we will call you to confirm the date of your procedure.

Day of the Procedure

On the day of your surgery, please ensure that you:

  • Bring your regular medication.
  • Wear comfortable clothing. For children, please also bring a spare set of pajamas and slippers.
  • Do not wear artificial or painted fingernails.
  • Do not bring jewelry, money, or makeup.
  • Arrive fasting (having had nothing to eat or drink) and accompanied by only one person.
  • Bring proper identification (your national ID/foreign national ID number—NIF/NIE—and your health card).

You must shower the day before and again on the day of the procedure, just before coming to the hospital.

Upon arrival, depending on the type of procedure, you will need to go to one of the following locations:

  • The Ambulatory Surgery Unit (2nd floor)
  • Or the Admission/Reception Unit (1st floor)

From there, a member of the hospital support staff (orderly) will escort you to the surgical area, where you may store your belongings in a small locker. The person accompanying you will keep the key.

After the procedure, you will remain under observation for a few hours. The person accompanying you may be with you toward the end of your stay (minors, however, may be accompanied at all times).

Going home

You may not drive or travel by public transport to return home. Someone else must take responsibility for getting you home.

Once at home, you will need someone to stay with you for the first 24 hours, and you must have a telephone available.

The day after the procedure, you will receive a call from the hospital to check on your well-being. You will be sent home with a pain management plan and the corresponding medical prescriptions. You can also download your medication plan via the "La Meva Salut" portal.
