CSUR: Diverse Sexual Development

The Germans Trias i Pujol University Hospital is a Centre, Service and Unit of reference for the care of adult and paediatric patients with Diverse Sexual Development (DSD).

Disorders of sexual development constitute a group of uncommon conditions, most of which are considered rare diseases, characterised by great clinical variability both between the different entities and among individuals with the same diagnosis. Although some conditions, such as Klinefelter syndrome or Turner syndrome, have a higher incidence, the rest are low-prevalence conditions that require highly specialised care.

The manifestations can be detected at any stage of life, from the prenatal period to adulthood, and the diagnosis can be complex; in fact, it is estimated that in approximately 50% of cases a genetic cause is not identified. The diversity of situations and the possible anatomical, therapeutic, surgical and prognostic implications necessitate a multidisciplinary approach and continuous support throughout all stages of life, to ensure appropriate care adapted to the needs of each individual.
